President Toda first presented the Three Guidelines in December 1957. He formulated these guidelines after much reflection, while battling serious health problems. He was seeking to clarify the kind of faith to which members should aspire so that each and every one of them, without exception, might attain happiness. Several years later, in 2003, two additional guidelines were added to the three formulated by the Master by his disciple, Daisaku Ikeda. The five eternal guidelines of Soka Gakkai are immutable principles for deepening our faith. They point the way toward the attainment of Buddhahood and the realization of kosen-rufu.
“A symbol of boundless hope and infinite passion, the sun never stops and embraces everything with its compassionate rays. Nichiren Buddhism is the Buddhism of the sun.” - Daisaku Ikeda
